What you'll learn:

While learning to say ‘no’ is critical to protecting our time, knowing when to say ‘yes’ is equally important! Strategic yeses can accelerate our careers and open up valuable opportunities and learning – but they’re not always obvious. Sometimes, what looks like a mundane commitment (joining a hiring committee, mentoring the new starter, sharing an update in a meeting) can actually be stepping stones towards our bigger goals. The key is to spot which opportunities are worth our time and align with where we want to go.

💡 Get clear on your goals first: Having visible, written-down goals (even just 12 months ahead) makes it much easier to spot good opportunities when they show up. It’s harder to recognise a strategic yes if you don’t know what you’re aiming for.

💡 Look for opportunities that tick multiple boxes: A good ‘yes’ should hit at least a couple of these: making your work visible to decision-makers, building valuable relationships, stretching yourself, or bringing you joy. We’re more engaged and likely to progress when we align our work with these factors.

💡 Always count the real cost: What looks like ‘just 2 hours a month’ often isn’t! Factor in prep time, follow-up work, mental energy, and what you’ll have to say no to instead. Sometimes, a great opportunity is actually just a fast track to burnout, so do the math before committing.
