What you'll learn:
The moment a problem lands, your clever brain tries to hand you an answer. It wants the dopamine hit of knowing, so grabs that first idea and gets attached. Part three of our problem-solving series is about slowing that down before you speed up, because the first solution is rarely the best one.
💡 Brainstorm before you commit: Set a timer, go broad, and list a bunch of ways you could solve the problem. Go wild. The goal is to surface ideas that didn’t come to mind first.
💡 Constraints are your container: We’d all love the Ferrari solution, but sometimes the budget says 1980s Mazda. Size your budget, time, capacity, skills, tools and dependencies, and you’ll know what has to be true for a solution – before you fall in love with it.
💡 Show your workings: Choose your top three, note the unknowns, then tell the story: the problem, your recommendation, and the options you considered along the way. Explaining what you discounted (and why) builds trust in your judgement and can head off pushback.
Other sessions in this series:
Part one: Problem discovery – using the five whys to find the real problem
Part two: Problem analysis – sizing and defining success
We also referred to Rhiannon McKinnon’s mini-masterclass on decision frameworks – a handy companion when it’s time to justify your final call.
