Strategic thinking

13 mins: Finance 101: the fundamentals

Mini-masterclass with Catherine Cresswell, CA and Kelsey Garratt, CA, strategic finance professionals.

What you'll learn:

There are still gaps in financial knowledge for many women (thanks to a number of historical barriers). That matters because research shows that understanding finance is actually a key predictor of reaching C-suite and board positions.

Thankfully, finance is a skill we can all build. Catherine Cresswell and Kelsey Garratt are starting with the basics to help you feel more confident with financial concepts and spot how they show up in your day-to-day work.

💡 There are two ways to think about money in business: When it’s earned vs when it’s received (accrual vs cash). Most businesses record money when it’s earned, even if they haven’t received the cash yet – like recording your gym membership costs spread across the whole year rather than just when you paid for it.

💡 Financial health is tracked through three main lenses: Profit/loss (are we making money?), cash flow (do we have enough money to pay our bills?), and the balance sheet (what do we own vs what do we owe?). Think of these as different ways to understand how well a business is doing.

💡 Numbers tell deeper stories: We can better understand the business using metrics that combine financial and non-financial data. For example, looking at marketing cost per new customer tells us more about efficiency than just looking at total marketing spend (and these insights help us make better business decisions!).
