What you'll learn:
Most of us confuse influencing with convincing. We focus on what WE want – our budget, promotion, resources – without finding out what everyone needs and what a win-win could look like.
We all see the workplace from our own position. You might question a restructure because you see great people losing jobs. Leadership might see budget constraints and strategic shifts. Both perspectives are real, but are incomplete when considered in isolation:
1️⃣ Get clear on YOUR puzzle piece: Don’t confuse your position with your real need. ‘I need a promotion’ might actually be ‘I want recognition for my work (to know it has impact).’ Use the five whys to dig deeper – there might be multiple ways to get what you need.
2️⃣ Understand THEIR puzzle piece: Ask yourself, ‘What’s it like to be them?’ Look up (what are their wider pressures?), observe (what’s taking their time?), and ask: ‘What would success look like for you?’
3️⃣ Find where your pieces fit together: Common ground isn’t compromise – it’s identifying shared outcomes that work for everyone. Complete this sentence: ‘We both want…’ Then re-position your ask.
The payoff: When it comes to influencing, focusing on shared interests results in 40% better outcomes for BOTH parties. Yet most people never even look for that common ground.
