50 mins: Be brave and break things

Expert interview with Ali Mau, award-winning journalist, co-founder of legal charity Tika and author of ‘No Words for This’.

What you'll learn:

Award-winning journalist Ali Mau appeared on TV screens for over 20 years before launching the #MeTooNZ campaign in 2018. Now co-founder of legal charity Tika and author of ‘No Words for This,’ she’s become a leading voice for survivors of sexual harm.

💡 Be the person who takes the first brave step – From her teenage rebellion walking out of a classroom to launching #MeTooNZ despite brutal backlash, Ali learned that most people won’t act first but will follow someone brave. When facing pushback, ask yourself: ‘Is it reason enough not to do the thing?’ The answer has rarely been yes. Backlash we’re seeing now? It’s the patriarchy’s ‘extinction burst’ – a dying system fighting back because we’re actually winning.

💡 Your response to someone sharing sexual harm can shape everything – What you say in that first moment matters hugely. Show empathy (‘I’m sorry this happened, how can I help?’), listen without judgment, keep them safe, keep it confidential, and follow up. These small things can make the difference between someone getting help or never speaking about it again. Please share the guide below with your workplace.

💡 Collective action beats suffering alone – Nearly a million Kiwi have experienced sexual harm, but only 7% ever report it. Tika connects survivors harmed by the same person, giving them the healing power of knowing ‘you’re not alone’ while building stronger legal cases. Most people know their attacker’s name, and serial offenders harm an average of 6 people – which is why connecting the dots changes everything. Please share the love so they can launch with impact – donate here.
