24 mins: Craft your value statement

Mini-masterclass with Jane Guy, business coach.

What you'll learn:

Jane Guy is a business coach who helps women articulate their value so their work is clearly understood, recognised, and resourced. Twenty years spent on the front lines of crisis and social work have given her a unique perspective on how value is perceived: It isn’t effort; it’s the problem you remove:

The visibility-to-value gap is costing you. Being reliable, helpful, and busy isn’t the same as being seen as strategic. If your contribution is vaguely described – by you or by others – you’re being overlooked for promotions, projects, and opportunities that should have your name on them.

Your value statement has one job: name the problem you remove. Most of us describe what we do, but very few of us describe the impact we create. The formula is simple – ‘I help [who] solve [specific problem] so they can [meaningful result]’ – but the challenge is being specific. Less: ‘I’m a problem solver’ or ‘I create growth strategies.’ More: ‘I help leaders get clarity from complex data so they can make confident decisions.’ T

This is harder than it sounds – and that’s normal. Most people default to sharing what we do because no one teaches us how to articulate the value we create. Jane still regularly refines her value statement, so don’t overthink it! Start with a working draft in the cheat sheet we provide, share it with someone, and iterate.
