What you'll learn:
Your value isn’t your effort – it’s the problem you remove.
Jane Guy is a business coach based in Queenstown who helps women articulate their value so their work is clearly understood, recognised, and resourced. She spent 20 years on the frontlines of crisis and social work before reinventing herself as a business coach – and now is helping women close the gap between being visible and being valued.
Most of us describe what we do, but very few of us describe the problem we solve.
⭐ The visibility-to-value gap is costing you. Being seen as reliable, helpful, and busy isn’t the same as being seen as strategic. If your contribution is vaguely described – by you or by others – you’re being overlooked for promotions, projects, and opportunities that should have your name on them.
⭐ Your value statement has one job: name the problem you remove. The formula is simple – ‘I help [who] solve [specific problem] so they can [meaningful result]’ – but the work is in getting specific. Not ‘I’m a problem solver’ or ‘I create growth strategies.’ More like: ‘I help leaders get clarity from complex data so they can make confident decisions.’ That’s the difference between describing your role and describing your impact.
⭐ This is harder than it sounds – and that’s normal. Most people default to the first part (what they do) because no one teaches us the second part (the result they create). Jane still refines hers, so don’t overthink this! Start with a working draft in our cheat sheet, share it with someone, and iterate.
